FAQs
Beginning therapy should feel transparent and reassuring from the very first step. Below, you will find answers regarding our somatic and neuroexperiential modalities, how our clinic handles health insurance verification, and what to expect when working with our team in South Anchorage or across Alaska via telehealth.
Therapy & Clinical Modalities
What types of therapy does Common Thread Counseling provide?
We specialize in trauma recovery, relationship dynamics, and nervous system regulation using both traditional psychotherapy and advanced neuroexperiential modalities. Our core approaches include:
- Brainspotting & EMDR: Bottom-up, subcortical trauma processing techniques designed to process traumatic memories where they are stored in the body and brain.
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): Evidence-based relationship counseling for couples and individuals working through communication ruptures and attachment dynamics.
- Somatic & Polyvagal Approaches: Techniques that calm chronic fight-or-flight activations and restore nervous system balance.
- Cognitive & Behavioral Frameworks: TF-CBT, DBT-informed skills, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to build concrete emotional regulation and distress-tolerance tools.
What concerns do your clinicians treat?
Our clinical team works with adults, adolescents, teens, and couples navigating:
- Complex PTSD, developmental trauma, and single-incident trauma
- Anxiety, chronic worry, panic, and phobias
- Depression, burnout, and persistent emotional numbness
- Relationship conflict, communication issues, and attachment wounds
- Life transitions, grief, and identity navigation
Do you offer in-person and telehealth sessions?
Yes. We see clients in person at our South Anchorage clinic and provide secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth to residents located anywhere in the state of Alaska.
Insurance, Billing & Fees
What insurance plans do you accept?
Common Thread Counseling is an in-network provider with several major commercial networks:
- Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska
- Aetna
- Meritain Health
- EBMS
- Moda Health
Because individual network participation varies slightly based on clinician licensing levels and credentialing timelines, our intake coordinator matches you with a therapist who aligns with both your therapeutic goals and your specific plan.
What if I don't see my insurance listed?
If your insurance plan offers out-of-network behavioral health benefits, our administrative team provides complimentary out-of-network courtesy billing directly to your insurance company on your behalf. We can also provide detailed Superbills upon request so you can submit them for allowable direct reimbursement.
Can I pay privately without insurance?
Yes. Many clients choose private pay for greater privacy, to work outside insurance treatment guidelines, or to participate in specialized intensive therapy formats (such as two-day Deep Dives). Direct self-pay rates are available upon request.
Can I use my HSA or FSA card?
Yes. We accept Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for copays, coinsurance, deductibles, and approved private-pay sessions. We also accept all major credit and debit cards.
How do I find out what my session will cost?
Prior to your first appointment, our billing team contacts your insurance carrier directly to verify your mental health benefits, deductible status, and required copay or coinsurance so there are no unexpected costs.
What is your cancellation policy?
We require at least 24 business hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Appointments canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice or missed appointments incur your clinician’s full private pay fee. We provide a one-time courtesy waiver for your first late cancellation.
Getting Started & What to Expect
How do I schedule my first appointment?
Getting started begins with three simple steps:
- Free Initial Consultation: Reach out to schedule a complimentary 30-minute phone consultation with our intake coordinator to discuss your needs and clinician fit.
- Benefit Verification: Our billing team verifies your insurance benefits and confirms your estimated out-of-pocket costs.
- First Appointment: Meet your therapist in person at our South Anchorage office or via our secure telehealth platform.
What happens during the initial intake session?
Your first clinical appointment focuses on your personal history, current symptoms, and primary therapeutic goals. Together with your therapist, you will create a collaborative, personalized treatment plan and determine session cadence.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please have a government-issued photo ID, your insurance card (if using commercial benefits), and an active payment method (credit/debit or HSA/FSA card) on file in our secure client portal.
Supervision & Professional Services
Do you provide clinical supervision or consultation?
Yes. Common Thread Counseling provides State of Alaska approved LPC supervision for post-graduate clinicians pursuing professional counselor licensure (LPC). We also offer clinical consultation in Brainspotting and neuroexperiential trauma modalities.
