About Alicia Alfaro

“Feeling understood and connected can transform how we experience ourselves and our relationships. Healing begins when we have a safe space to explore our emotions, build trust, and find new ways forward together.”

Meet Alicia Alfaro, MS, LPC

When communication breaks down or the same disagreements keep coming up, it can be difficult to feel close to your partner. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I help couples understand the emotions beneath their conflicts, recognize patterns that leave them feeling disconnected, and build more secure, fulfilling relationships.

My work with couples centers on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an approach that explores emotional needs and the ways partners reach for connection. Together, we work toward expressing those needs more openly, responding to one another with greater understanding, and strengthening trust and emotional closeness.

I also provide individual counseling for adolescents and adults navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, emotional regulation difficulties, and life transitions. My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that every person has unique strengths and the capacity for growth.

  • Who I Work With: Couples seeking stronger connection and healthier communication, as well as adolescents and adults navigating emotional, behavioral, and relationship challenges.
  • Focus Areas: Couples and relationship concerns, communication difficulties, emotional connection, attachment concerns, trauma and PTSD, anxiety and depression, emotional regulation, life transitions, adolescent behavioral challenges, ADHD and neurodevelopmental differences, and family relationships.
  • Primary Approaches: Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for individuals and couples, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and Family Systems Therapy.

Background & Perspective

I earned my Master of Science in Clinical Psychology and a Certificate in Children’s Mental Health from the University of Alaska Anchorage, where I also completed my bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

Before joining Common Thread Counseling, I worked as a Residential Clinical Therapist at AK Child & Family, providing individual, family, and group therapy to adolescents with complex emotional and behavioral needs. My experience also includes clinical work at the Alaska Psychiatric Institute and the Psychological Services Center, supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds in inpatient and outpatient settings.

These experiences have shaped my understanding of how trauma, attachment, and emotional experiences influence our relationships. I bring that perspective to my work with couples and individuals, helping clients understand their responses, communicate their needs, and develop more supportive ways of relating to themselves and others.

Whether you are seeking support as a couple or on your own, my goal is to help you feel heard, build on your strengths, and move toward greater connection and well-being.
